By Any Other Name

10th grade students answered some critical thinking questions about Two Kinds to review the story. Then students started reading an autobiography By Any Other Name by Santha Rama Rau. This is about a young girl, Santha, who at the age of 5 1/2 experiences racism in her British-colonized school in 1920s India. She is remamed, Cynthia by the British headmistress, while her sister is renamed, Pamela (Primela). The story is valuable to the students to show the narrow-mindedness of some cultures/people. Also, it reveals how different families overcome racism. Students were asked to finish reading the story and to thank a veteran for homework!

This sounds like a story that should open the eyes of your students. I hope it works!
