Customer Service

Monday in class, 12 Applied Communication students discussed tone of voice, inflection and impressions created by the voice. We completed Practice 3:1: Telephone Images on page 73 where the students read excerpt and decided whether the speaker was male or female, the age of the speaker and then other impressions about the speaker. We went over this to check for understanding. Then the students completed Practice 3-2: Vocal Inflections about how sentences may change meaning depending on which words are emphasized. This was a whole class exercise. The last exercise we completed in class was Practice 3-3: Making Your Voice Work for You. The students read scenarios and then read the comments from either the salesperson or worker making sure to respond in an inappropriate manner. This teaches the students to think about their tone of voice and how they respond to others. They must learn to think about how they might come across to other people. The homework was Practice 3-4: Workplace Scenario on page 78.
